Melbourne Fishing Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 November 2026
Melbourne Fishing is an Android fishing-planning app published by Naughty Bear Labs. This policy applies to com.app.melbournefishing.
Your fishing marks and settings
Names, coordinates, notes and caught-species records that you save in My Spots are stored in the app's private storage on your device. Bookmarked guides and settings are also stored locally. The app does not upload your private marks, notes or catch records to our forecast service, map providers or an AI service. It has no account or server synchronisation feature.
If you choose a Google Takeout or saved-places file to import, the app reads the selected file locally to create your private marks. The importer does not upload the file or its contents to our servers.
You can edit or delete private marks in the app. Clearing the app's storage or uninstalling it removes the app's local data. App-managed cloud backup and Android backup are disabled in the current app configuration. Any backup or device-transfer behaviour provided by your device manufacturer is controlled by that system.
Optional location and notifications
If you allow Android location access, the app uses your approximate or precise location to show where you are, centre the map and identify nearby fishing areas. Android controls the precision you grant. The app does not request background-location permission or upload a history of your movements to us.
Location access is optional. You can browse the map manually without it and change permission in Android settings. If you allow notifications, nearby-area alerts are generated locally. We do not operate a push-notification account or register you for marketing messages.
Online maps
The Google Play build uses the Google Maps SDK for Android when showing online maps. Some builds installed outside Google Play, including earlier versions, can also request satellite map tiles from Esri ArcGIS Online. Map requests disclose the area being viewed, which may be near your location if you use the locate feature. Providers also receive connection information, including your IP address, needed to deliver their services.
Google states that its Maps SDK collects request and device metadata, a Maps SDK-specific pseudonymous identifier, IP addresses and SDK crash or diagnostic information. Map-camera use can also produce interaction information such as panning and zooming. These providers handle information under their own policies:
- Google Privacy Policy and Google Maps SDK data disclosures.
- Esri Privacy Statement and Esri Products and Services Privacy Supplement.
Map tiles may be cached on your device. Bundled guides, ramp information and overview depth contours work without a network request.
Downloaded depth detail
When you zoom into fine depth contours or tap for a detailed depth reading, the app can download the required public depth tiles from Vercel Blob. Each tile filename identifies a geographic area being viewed or tapped. This may indicate an area near you if you use the locate feature. The app does not include an exact GPS coordinate, private mark name, note or catch record in a depth-tile request.
Vercel receives the requested tile filename and connection information, including your IP address and user-agent information, to deliver, secure and operate the service. Hosting logs are subject to Vercel's controls and retention practices. See Vercel's Privacy Notice.
Downloaded depth detail is kept in the app's device cache, with a limit of 64 MiB. Older tiles can be removed to make space and Android may clear cached files. Downloaded areas can work offline while their files remain cached. To remove downloaded depths, open More, find Depth downloads and tap Clear. You can also clear the app cache in Android settings. This does not delete your private marks.
Optional forecasts and fishing advice
When you open or refresh conditions, the app sends a named forecast-area identifier and selected species identifier to our HTTPS forecast service hosted by Vercel. It does not send your exact GPS point, private marks, notes or catch records. The service returns shared weather and marine forecasts and reviewed fishing tips. A saved response is cached privately on your device for use when disconnected.
Vercel processes network and request information, such as IP address, requested route and user-agent information, to deliver, secure and operate the service. The backend also uses a short-lived hashed representation of the connection IP address in memory to limit excessive requests. It does not create a fishing profile or location-history database. Hosting logs are subject to the provider's controls and retention practices. See Vercel's Privacy Notice.
The backend obtains shared forecast data from MET Norway and Copernicus Marine. Where Jev helps select advice, it receives forecast features and approved tip options from the server. Your personal fishing marks, notes and caught-species records are not included. The app has no free-text AI chat or user account.
Advertising, analytics and purchases
Melbourne Fishing contains no ads, in-app purchases or developer-added advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. Mapping providers may collect their own operational and usage information as described above. We do not sell your private fishing marks or catch records.
Links and directions
If you open directions, the selected destination's coordinates and label are passed to the map or navigation app you choose. If you open an official source, forecast, rules or support link, your browser or email app connects to that destination. This happens at your request and the destination's own privacy policy applies.
Retention, deletion and your choices
Local marks remain until you delete them or remove the app's data. Settings, forecast responses and map caches may remain until replaced, cleared through Android or removed with the app. Depth downloads use an evictable device cache as described above. We cannot retrieve data that stays only on your device.
You can withdraw location or notification permissions in Android settings. You can use bundled content without opening online conditions. Contact us to ask about, access, correct or request deletion of information we control. We retain support correspondence only while needed to answer the request, maintain necessary records and meet applicable obligations. Rights depend on the laws that apply to you.
Security and international processing
The app uses HTTPS for its forecast, map and depth-download connections. App-private storage uses Android's application isolation. No internet service or device storage can be guaranteed completely secure. Our providers may process operational information outside Australia under their own privacy policies.
